I hope you had the chance to visit our “pop-up” exhibition in November. The management at Collins Place offered us this amazing space – an empty shop (previously a menswear shop) right on Collins Street. We managed in 8 hours to turn this empty shell into a brilliant exhibition space to display the original artwork of the 1990 Melbourne Map and other memorabilia. Lewis set up his easel and The (new) Melbourne Map in the shop window and spent the week illustrating and chatting to visitors.
We absolutely loved meeting our existing supporters and making new map friends. The constant stream of visitors was so great and seeing passers by looking through the window was a treat.
During the exhibition week we received some fabulous feedback on The Melbourne Map illustration (work in progress) and some super ideas and suggestions. Many visitors found their home, workplace or special Melbourne venue on the drawing.
I have to say one of my favorite visitors was Max – five years old and he could identify and name all the W-class trams on the original 1990 map. Here is Max having a detailed discussion with Lewis.
Thank you to everyone who came to visit, and a big thank you to Collins Place and the Sofitel Hotel who made the event possible.
During the interview I talked about the original jigsaw we printed back in the 90’s and that it was near impossible to get a copy unless you were lucky enough to find one in a second hand shop. The next day we had a visitor from a very excited Melbourne Map supporter who had gone in to the local Vinnies store and found a 25 year old Melbourne Map jigsaw for $2.25!
Next we had a visit from Brett McLeod from Chanel 9. He and his talented cameraman put together a couple of great stories – Here are some links to our facebook page with replays of the 4pm and 6pm news footage (slightly different story at each timeslot).
And lastly I had a chat with Ross & John on 3AW who remembered the map from way back then and were keen to learn about the new version. Listen here.
